Zeke's Favorite Things

Things that I think are awesome

Author: Zeke

n. the inexplicable urge to push people away, even close friends who you really like—as if all your social tastebuds suddenly went numb, leaving you unable to distinguish cheap politeness from the taste of genuine affection, unable to recognize its rich and ambiguous flavors, its long and delicate maturation, or the simple fact that each tasting is double-blind. Literally wall-builder-sadness.

This is a feeling I used to experience very often when I was younger. I would go through deep bouts of depression and push everyone away even my best friends and loved ones. I wouldn’t allow anyone to help me and would just dive deeper and wallow. While this isn’t an issue as much anymore it’s nice to know there is a name for it. When something has a name you know other people are going through it as well. Also being able to name something makes it easier to overcome. A nameless thing is like fighting mist.

So while this doesn’t necessarily fall under my favorite things, I do love the fact that this word exists. Also this post is being typed from a hotel room in the Bahamas so don’t worry about me things are going great.

Orange Theory Fitness

OTF Workout Summary

I’ve started Orange Theory Fitness recently and I love it!  I have done various workout programs in the past and this is one of my favorites.  It’s super intense with a focus on cardio but with weight training and body weight workouts as well.  It’s HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) so workouts consist mostly of treadmill, rower and weights.  Every workout is slightly different and they seem to be really effective at pushing you.  Its also centered around heart rate and everyone wears a heart rate monitor and shows your status and progress and a huge monitor.  There are many posts outlining all the benefits of orange theory and I’ll link to a few good ones because they are much better than anything I’d write.  This workout finally got me to run which anyone who knows me knows has been a life long challenge.  I’m 2 weeks in so still fairly new but as of now I think this is a good option, especially with New Years resolutions coming up.  They talk a lot about splat points and after burn which I don’t know if I buy into but who cares?  Its a great workout even if there is no after burn at all!

I do think when I get more time and settled (life is kinda nuts right now, moving, etc.) I will add in a couple days of traditional heavy weightlifting for a more well rounded workout program but I still think orange theory is expensive but awesome!

Headspace can literally change your life!

When  I was in college I was described as a psychologist as the most ADD person he had ever met.  My whole life I’ve struggled with ADD when it comes to fitting into structured society.  I eventually just said fuck it and decided to live my life in a way that fit with how my mind worked.  I tried various methods in my later years to improve things and I discovered meditation.  Meditation was brought up frequently by very successful people and the podcasts I listened to would mention it repeatedly but I thought there was no way I was going to be able to meditate.  Sitting quietly seemed to be outside the realm of possibility to me.  I read multiple books which all helped and gave me tips but still I wasn’t able to successfully meditate.  Then I found this app which walks you though meditation with guidance and animations that will help you be successful in a meditation practice.  The true sign of success was when a stranger told me I seemed very peaceful and had a calming energy which if you know me is very unusual.  The other tip that helped me the most with my meditation practice is the fact that I would always say I couldn’t be as peaceful as a Buddhist monk but then it was pointed out that if you watched the NBA you would think “I could never dunk like Jordan,” but that doesn’t mean you would never find benefit in playing basketball.  Buddhist monks dedicate their life to meditating so of course they will be better than you.  Focus on just sitting for 10 min and if you get a few seconds of a clear mind call it a win.  It’s like going to the gym for your brain.  Give it a shot, trust me the benefits will be immense.

I love the Kindle Paperwhite!

Kindle Paperwhite has been one of my favorite things for years.  My whole life I’ve been a huge reader.  Whether I was in school or working I  always read at least 30 books a year.  I’m also pretty ADD so I would read multiple books at a time.  When I was a younger this meant I would literally carry around multiple books like Rory Gilmore from the Gilmore Girls.  This was a huge pain in the ass.  The kindle changed all that and the Kindle Paperwhite is my favorite version of the kindle.  They have other fancier versions of the Kindle but I can’t imagine needing more than what the Paperwhite offers.  It has a light but isnt backlit so you don’t have to stare into a light.  It has an E-Ink display which is the best for reading anywhere because it won’t hurt your eyes and doesn’t have glare from the sun and other light sources.  Its small enough to carry anywhere and the battery life can last up to 6 weeks.  Also you can read before bed and you don’t have to worry about it messing up your sleep because the E-Ink display won’t mess with you like reading a tablet or watching a screen will.  Pair it with the official amazon cover and it’s the perfect solution to your reading issues.  Another great thing is that amazon puts books on Sale everyday so if you wait awhile you can ususally find the books you want to read for less than five dollars and many times as low as 99 cents.  You can also share the books you own with a family member with a kindle and there are all you can read services available, though I don’t use them because the books I wanted to read didn’t seem to be on there all the time but my sister uses it and loves it.  In closing this little device has made my life easier and more enjoyable and has made reading much more available.  If you like to read I’d suggest grabbing one.  Right now they are on sale for 99$ which is 20$ off but even at full price they are worth it!
